About MDS
The Macular Degeneration Society (MDS) is a non-profit organisation set up in June 2007 to offer support for macular degeneration patients and build awareness of this eye disease in Singapore.
The society recognises the need to spread the word on the disease and reach out to macular degeneration sufferers in Singapore, as MD is fast becoming the No. 1 eye problem in the country.
The lack of awareness of this chronic disease in Singapore is worrying. A 2006 survey found that only seven among a hundred Singaporeans have heard of the disease.
A study in 1997 also found that there were 154 unknown cases for every known case.
There are no current figures on how many Singaporeans have MD, but a community study in 1997 showed that one in four people aged 60 and above here suffered from age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
MDS hopes to reach out and help macular degeneration sufferers through regular support group sessions.
The society also holds forums, inviting eye specialists to share latest medical developments and breakthroughs with members and the public.
Associate Professor Au Eong Kah Guan, medical director and senior consultant eye surgeon with the Singapore International Eye Cataract Retina Centre, is the adviser of MDS.
